Film Series: Hopeful - The Story of MaineWorks

Date and Time: November 16th from 4pm-7pm
Location: Alnoba 24 Cottage Road Kensington, NH 03833

Award winning film, “Hopeful: The Story of MaineWorks”, tells the story of Margo Walsh who literally built a business from her kitchen table, as a single mother of two. Her company, MaineWorks, employs ex-cons and people in recovery, exclusively. We meet many of her employees and hear their stories of hope. We hear from Maine’s Governor, Janet Mills, and US Senator from Maine, Angus King, who both discuss how Margo’s model is ripe for both state and nationwide roll-outs; MaineWorks is already operational throughout Maine and expanding into five other states. Miraculously, Margo is part of the discussion for staffing for the future, as the Infrastructure bill works its way through Congress. “Hopeful – The Story of MaineWorks” is an uplifting portrait of a female American entrepreneur with a social conscience, who gives individuals a second chance to rebuild their lives, and a pathway back to the community and redemption through hard work.

In addition to viewing this incredible film, you will also have the amazing opportunity to meet the daring woman behind it all, Margo Walsh, for a Q&A session following the film!

Premiere of Beyond Zero

Premiere of Beyond Zero

Maine Conscious Business Collective is thrilled to partner with ClimateWork Maine to bring this movie to Portland.

Join us at the University of Maine as we bring business and community leaders together in a memorable event to network and learn about sustainability, stakeholder capitalism, ESG and the related challenges organizations face going forward. ‘Beyond Zero’ is not only an inspirational story but can serve as a meaningful spark of action to address climate change, define corporate higher purpose, and illuminate the roadmap to sustainable transformation.

See the feature-length documentary in a private screening that chronicles the story of visionary leader Ray Anderson and his company, Interface, embark on a high-stakes journey to become a 100-percent sustainable enterprise.

Nathen Havey, Beyond Zero’s director will join us after the film for an intimate fireside conversation.

This film is the product of a series of serendipities. Nathan Havey first encountered the Interface story in Ray Anderson’s book Confessions of a Radical Industrialist in 2010. That’s why, when staging a storytelling event about business purpose in Atlanta, his goal was to find a story from Interface. The storyteller that came forward was Erin Meezan, Chief Sustainability Officer.

On his first call with Erin, Nathan was so nervous to meet Ray’s lead sustainability person that his hands were sweaty, his heart pounding, and mouth dry. He felt like he was talking to Oprah. Erin graciously accepted the invitation to tell her story and subsequently Nathan learned much about what had happened at Interface since the publication of Ray’s last book. Soon after, Erin took the stage alongside five other storytellers, including Elaine Dinos who would later become a Beyond Zero investor, and video from that night is featured in the film.

Another storytelling event in Atlanta, co-hosted by the local chapter of Conscious Capitalism, introduced Nathan to Jim Hartzfeld, the person who asked Ray to give the speech that set the whole journey in motion. Between Jim and Erin’s reflections, Nathan saw a clear story-arc that could make a great movie. Once he saw it, he couldn’t let it go. During years of corporate training, Nathan was shocked at how few people had heard of Interface. It was time to change that.

Erinch Sahan from Doughnut Economics Action Lab Team presented by Maine Conscious Business Collective

https://www.maineconsciousbusinesscollective.com/events/erinch-sahan-from-doughnut-economics-action-lab-team

Erinch Sahan is the Business & Enterprise Lead at Doughnut Economics Action Lab. For over 10 years, he has focused on the transformation of the business world to make it regenerative and distributive by design – exploring governance and ownership models that embed social and ecological priorities.

Doughnut Economics is a compass for human prosperity in the 21st century. It highlights the transformations needed if we are to meet the needs of all people within the means of the living planet. For business, Doughnut Economics means a deep internal reflection on the traits of enterprise design. This talk will give an overview of Doughnut Economics, identify the broader economic transformations needed and identify ways businesses can pursue regenerative and distributive goals through a redesign of their purpose, networks, governance, ownership and finance.

Erinch will be speaking to us virtually, but we will be gathering in-person in downtown Portland, exact location TBD. Light breakfast will be provided.
